Need real Bible search on a church website or in an app, without building and hosting your own Bible database? Bible SuperSearch API is a free JSON web service for passage lookup and full-text search across 91 Bible modules in 51 languages, including the KJV, ASV, WEB, Geneva Bible, and NET Bible.^1
Calls are simple GET requests that return JSON, work cross-domain, and support JSONP, so the service drops into websites and apps with very little code.^1 Search goes beyond keywords: phrase, boolean, regular-expression, and proximity searches are all supported.^1 Five modules come in editions with Strong's numbers, including the KJV, ASV, and Reina-Valera 1909, and every module in the live list carries its year and a copyright flag: 90 of the 91 are flagged as not copyrighted, so most of the library is public-domain text.^2 The same API runs the ministry's own web search client and its WordPress plugin.^1
Hosted use is free, limited to 1,000 hits per day per website, and its privacy policy says the API stores no user-identifiable data on end users.^1 Builders who need more can download the open-source code (GNU GPL v3.0) and install the API on their own server with no usage limits.^1 One term matters, stated plainly in the API's own terms: the API and client software are licensed for non-commercial use only, and commercial use requires the ministry's prior expressed written permission.^1
The story behind it is a ministry project. Bible SuperSearch is a ministry of Preserved Word Ministries; its source files carry Luke Mounsey's copyright from 2006, and AIC Web Tech builds and maintains the API today.^1 The ministry's doctrinal statement declares that "the Bible is the final authority on all matters, especially those of faith and practice," affirms God as Trinity, and teaches that salvation is "ONLY found in faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the Cross."^3 The same statement teaches that God preserved His Word particularly through the King James Bible for English-speaking peoples, a conviction that fits the library's deep bench of historic English translations.^3 The downloadable API is actively maintained, reaching version 6.2.2 in February 2026.^4
