Want the New Living Translation inside your app, church website, or study tool? The NLT API is Tyndale House Publishers' own web service for the translation, provided so that other web applications can include NLT text and search results on their own pages.^1
The API runs on plain HTTP GET requests, and most endpoints return HTML excerpts that can drop straight into a web page.^2 The passages endpoint returns the Scripture text for one or more references, ordered by reference, and a search endpoint finds matching passages with keyword, exact-phrase, or regular-expression queries.^2 A parse endpoint turns a typed reference string into a structured JSON list, and a tagging endpoint scans your own HTML and turns Scripture references into links to the NLT website.^2 Reading plan endpoints list the plans the API supports and return the reading for any given date.^2 Four versions are served: the NLT in American English, the NLT in UK English, the Nueva Traducción Viviente in Spanish, and the King James Version.^2
You can start anonymously: with the documented TEST key, or no key at all, requests are limited to 50 verses per request and 500 requests per day.^2 A free API key from the signup page raises the limits to 500 verses per request and 5,000 requests per day, the verse cap matching the NLT copyright statement.^1 Both tiers are non-commercial, and users affirm that their use is consistent with Tyndale's purpose; commercial use is arranged by explaining the intended use at signup.^1
The story behind it is the publisher's own. The New Living Translation was rendered faithfully into today's English from the ancient texts by 90 leading Bible scholars.^1 Tyndale House Publishers is substantially owned by the Tyndale House Foundation, and its profits help underwrite the foundation's mission, "to spread the Good News of Christ around the world," through literature consistent with biblical principles and a drive to make God's Word accessible.^3 For a developer, that means the NLT comes straight from its publisher, under clear terms stated up front.
