Bellwether is an AI chat assistant that helps church leaders see their people clearly without living in church software. It connects to the tools a church already uses, including Planning Center, Rock RMS, and Mailchimp, and answers plain-English questions about people, attendance, volunteers, and groups in a simple chat.^1
A leader can ask who has not attended recently and might need a check-in, which new families have not been contacted yet, or who served last month but has not been back, and Bellwether answers in seconds.^1 It also helps act on the answer, drafting the email list or triggering the follow-up, without leaving the conversation.^1 Bellwether sits on top of a church's existing tools rather than replacing them, and setup takes about ten minutes.^1 It is built for church administrators, ministry leaders, communications teams, and executive and operations pastors.^1
The assistant is powered by Anthropic's Claude API. When a question needs ministry data, Bellwether retrieves only the data needed, fetching in real time rather than keeping a separate copy of a church's records.^2 Church data is never used to train AI models.^2 Administrators control which categories the assistant can access and which fields are masked, and data access is recorded in audit logs.^2 Access is read-only, and Bellwether respects the permissions each team member already has in the source tools.^1 Shelby Black told ChurchTechToday the company has made a firm decision not to open pastoral care notes to AI querying.^3
Bellwether is built by Shelby and Andy Black. On the site, Shelby writes that churches had the data, but getting to it required technical expertise most ministry leaders do not have time to develop, or hours they do not have to spend.^1 In an interview she put the origin more personally: "My husband Andy and I started building Bellwether out of a personal experience of feeling forgotten by a church we loved."^3 They had been deeply involved, and when life got busy and they missed church or paused volunteering, no one noticed.^3 Together they bring a combined 28 years of working in and serving the Church, in communications, worship, and youth ministry.^1 On the 95Podcast, Shelby said, "AI cannot speak for God."^4
Bellwether is sold by subscription, with Individual and Team monthly plans and a custom Church plan.^1
