Ever feel like you're reading the Bible but not really understanding it — the cultural backdrop, the original language nuances, the flow of an entire book's argument? Berea was built to close that gap.^1
Named after the Bereans of Acts 17:11, who were commended for examining the Scriptures daily, Berea is a free web-based edtech platform that helps Christians learn biblical theology in a structured, engaging way — think Duolingo, but for understanding the Bible rather than just memorizing vocabulary.^1 Created by Jean Kabasomi, a UK-based theology graduate from Durham University with a master's in Biblical Studies from the University of Edinburgh and an MBA candidate at Oxford's Saïd Business School, the platform launched in May 2025 and has shipped regular feature releases since.^3
Berea's flagship is a guided journey through the book of Romans, now structured into eight sequential paths that trace Paul's letter from its historical foundations through to its vision for the church — with the first four paths available today and the rest in active development.^5 A standout feature is the Romans Argument Map, a visual overview that shows how each section of Paul's argument connects, so users can see the whole shape of the letter as they progress.^6 Greek language insights, historical context, cross-references, and Scripture memory are woven in where they clarify the passage, never as distractions. The platform uses the English Standard Version (ESV) throughout.^1
Beyond Romans, Berea offers standalone modules: Biblical Greek (alphabet flashcards and interactive quizzes), Church History (interactive storytelling and character discovery), and Bible Memorization (flashcards, fill-in-the-blank, audio practice, and spaced repetition).^4 An XP system and achievement badges track progress without turning study into a game.^1
The platform's philosophy is text-first, not topical — Scripture sets the agenda, not the app. Content is shaped by university-level biblical studies but written in clear, everyday language, so users can go deep without needing a theology degree.^1 As Kabasomi describes it: "Berea isn't a devotional app. It's not about creating more content. It's about equipping people with the tools and skills to engage Scripture for themselves — deeply, carefully, and faithfully."^2
Kabasomi also hosts the "Have You Ever Read…?" podcast, a monthly show interviewing Christians about books that shaped their faith, and writes for Premier Christianity magazine on faith, ethics, and entrepreneurship.^7^8 She is currently an AI Content Expert at Amazon while developing Berea as a solo founder.^3
