Built by Josh Wootonn, a design engineer who spent six months typing Psalms 1–137 and found that the practice not only sharpened his typing but deepened his daily walk with God. Inspired by Monkeytype, he created Type the Word so others could experience the same blend of skill-building and scripture meditation.^2 The project is fully open source on GitHub and completely free to use.^3
Type the Word tracks your progress through entire books, shows your typing consistency over time, and now supports nine Bible translations including ESV, NIV, NLT, CSB, NKJV, NASB, BSB, MSG, and NTV.^4 Custom themes, keyboard shortcuts, and auto-scrolling make long typing sessions comfortable. An active Discord community and monthly newsletter keep users connected.^5
The project has seen remarkable growth — users collectively type the Bible roughly twice per month, with over 70,000 verses typed in recent months and 600+ new signups. Christian schools are now piloting a Google Classroom integration so students can type assigned passages of Scripture.^5
