If you're a developer or ministry looking to bring Scripture into your app or website, the YouVersion Platform gives you the tools to do it — completely free.^1 Built by the team behind the world's most-downloaded Bible app (which crossed one billion installs in October 2025), the Platform offers a REST API and a suite of SDKs for Swift, Kotlin, JavaScript, React, React Native (Expo), and TypeScript, so you can embed Bible content on virtually any stack.^2
The standout feature is fast-track Bible licensing — instead of negotiating individually with publishers, you get instant access to 1,475 Bible versions across 1,244 languages, including the NIV, through YouVersion's existing partnerships.^3 The Bible SDK lets you drop a full Bible reader into your app with just a few lines of code, while Sign in with YouVersion preserves users' bookmarks, highlights, and notes across platforms.^1 As of the 2.4.0 SDK release, the Bible Reader supports server-backed highlights that sync to a reader's YouVersion account, with a built-in sign-in and consent flow.^10 A Developer Dashboard gives you analytics on how your community engages with Scripture.^1
At the Missional AI 2026 Global Summit, the team debuted YouVersion Platform AI Skills — installable via a single npx command — that teach coding agents like Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, and Gemini how to use the Platform's APIs and SDKs intelligently.^4
In June 2026, YouVersion partnered with Gloo to launch "Scripture in New Frontiers: A Virtual Summer Challenge," a global developer competition on Kaggle inviting builders to create Scripture-centered apps across four categories: Gaming Experiences, Creator & Content Tools, Wearables & Ambient AI, and Social & Emerging Interfaces.^9 The challenge leads into the 2026 Gloo AI Hackathon (October 6–8, 2026, Limelight Conference Center, Boulder, Colorado), where more than 700 mission-driven developers will compete for $250,000 in prizes across three tracks — Agents (powered by Gloo), Ministry Resourcing (powered by Masterworks), and Bibles (powered by YouVersion).^11 The 2025 hackathon's grand-prize winner, Team Veritas from Austin Christian University, has since commercialized the immersive Bible app they built on the Platform.^11
Among the Platform's first named partners are The Chosen and BibleProject, both integrating Scripture directly into their apps through the Platform APIs.^12
The Platform is an outreach of Life.Church in Edmond, Oklahoma, led by Bobby Gruenewald, who serves as CEO of YouVersion and has been building digital Bible tools since 2008.^5 The Platform itself is led by Gaylen Washington, Head of YouVersion Platform.^9 The SDKs are open source on GitHub, and the developer documentation is actively maintained.^7
