A Biblically-inspired game like no other — The Serpent & The Seed
Written by Andy Geers, edited by Cam Pak
The Serpent & The Seed is designed to help people engage with the big story of the Bible, who otherwise might never open a Bible for themselves. It's an emotionally engaging experience with stunning visuals, beautiful music and relaxing gameplay.
What is the story of The Serpent & The Seed?
I (Andy Geers, Project Lead) have been dreaming of making a Bible based game for over twenty years - but despite my best efforts I never managed to make it reality.
Somewhat out of frustration I tried something different and created the PrayerMate app, which very quickly took off, and eventually led to me going full time and founding the Discipleship Tech charity. Through that structure we've been able to circle back and over the last four years have drawn together a talented group of collaborators to create The Serpent & The Seed.

What helped you stay the course when challenges and troubles came?
It has been a real challenge to think through how to faithfully adapt the Bible story into a video game, without distorting the message or losing sight of what makes it exciting. And there have been many times when we've wondered if we can really pull it off! But working as a team has been a great blessing, and we have all felt really inspired by each other's input at different times - allowing the whole to be greater than the sum of its parts.

Where have you seen God's hand at work in The Serpent & The Seed?
We have seen God at work in SO many ways, whether in how we were introduced to different team members, or financial provision at just the right moment.
When I first contacted the musicians, Poor Bishop Hooper, I said "we're trying to make a game about trees in the Bible" and their response was "We'd love to talk - because only the other week we were saying how much we'd like to make an album about trees in the Bible".
Or the time we were just about to interview a candidate for a highly specialised role, and out of the blue we were contacted by somebody asking "what are your financial needs right now?" because their charity was closing its doors - and they were able to send us the exact amount we had budgeted for this new role.

What advice would you give to a Christian creative in the space?
I'm a big believer in the "Minimum Viable Project" - how can you simplify your idea as much as possible, to help you validate the concept and be sure it's worth investing further.
The first version of PrayerMate was live on the App Store in less than a month - though it has taken us the next 14 years to refine it! And The Serpent & The Seed existed as a black and white prototype long before its beautiful graphics came to be - but even in that form it felt like we had something special.
