Design Less, Minister More: The Vision Behind Church Canvas

Church Design Tool for Non-Designers

Church Canvas empowers overwhelmed church leaders to create stunning, custom visuals effortlessly with AI—so they can focus more on ministry and less on design challenges.

What is the story of Church Canvas?

For over 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as an associate pastor at a small church in Los Angeles, where I continue to minister today. Over the years, I’ve taken on just about every role you can imagine—youth ministry, children’s programs, worship, finances, education—you name it. I even coached our volleyball team one season, despite not knowing the first thing about volleyball! On top of it all, I was also the go-to media guy.

The team at Church Canvas shares a similar story. We’re not just designers—we’re ministry leaders too. Some of us are youth pastors, children’s directors, or even Christian school teachers. We fell in love with designing for churches back when we were still teenagers teaching ourselves how to use Photoshop. But like so many ministry leaders, we were juggling countless responsibilities—preparing sermons, discipling people, and managing day-to-day ministry needs. We also realized how difficult it could be for church workers without design experience to create professional materials. Watching this struggle in our ministries and others, combined with the rise of AI, sparked an idea.

That idea became Church Canvas. We created an AI-powered design tool to help pastors and church staff quickly and easily craft beautiful graphics for their church. Our mission is simple: to give you back your time—time to lead, minister, and connect with your congregation. At Church Canvas, we understand the demands of ministry because we live them everyday. Our tool isn’t just about simplifying design; it’s about freeing you up to focus on what truly matters—building relationships, serving your community, and sharing the love of Jesus.

What's one challenge that you overcame when working on Church Canvas?

The biggest challenge I had to face was the fear of uncertainty. I knew that, if I wanted to continue this course, I would have to quit my full-time job at a very successful tech company. But I was reminded in Scripture that God did not give us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. So I made the big leap and jumped all in!

Where have you seen God's hand in the building of Church Canvas?

I see how we are currently helping other pastors and church leaders that we invited as beta users. We have seen how Church Canvas has helped them and their ministry so much. We also saw the hand of God move when one of the main software that we use announced that they had a MAJOR update to their tool a couple days before our launch!

What advice would you give to a Christian creative?

Find something you're truly passionate about and solve a pain point you experience yourself. Then, have a lot of faith that God will provide.
