Mainstream Bible apps have become social platforms, with feeds and streaks competing with Scripture for your attention. Cardinal strips all of that away: no feed, no streaks, no sharing, and no algorithm deciding what verse you see today, just clean, reverent Scripture reading.^2
Cardinal pairs well-typeset reading with a guided daily Quiet Time (pause, read, reflect, apply, pray, close), verse-memorization practice, structured sermon notes, a private prayer list, and home-screen widgets. Seventeen translations are included. Thirteen are free and always will be: eight read fully offline, including the King James Version (KJV), Berean Standard Bible (BSB), World English Bible (WEB), and Majority Standard Bible (MSB), and five more are free to stream or download in Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Russian, and Chinese. The licensed translations (NKJV, NASB, CSB, NLT) come with Cardinal Pro, each with a free day to try, and reading Scripture never requires a subscription. Cardinal Pro is a subscription adding those licensed translations, fuller use of Ask, side-by-side reading, and study editing; the official site explains the free and Pro model.^1 Listen-as-you-read narrates Scripture aloud with words highlighting in sync, with six narrator choices.^1
Journeys walks readers through seventeen biblical journeys across real 3D satellite maps, including Paul's voyages, the Exodus, and Passion Week, free for everyone.^1 Threads, newer, tells twenty-four lives from Scripture as a hundred and forty moments plotted across the whole Bible, found by what they are about, such as fear, grief, and waiting, rather than by name.^2
The AI feature "Ask" opens over the page you are reading and returns verse-grounded answers with cross-references, word studies, and context, scoped to point users back to the text. Thirty major questions about Christianity are answered free, plus three of your own each month; beyond that, Ask is part of Pro.^1 Other refinements include Liquid Highlight for exact words, a Compare view across translations, word-study and chapter-context tools, and Studies with Podium mode for sermon preparation, where Cardinal gathers material from on-device data and does not write the sermon.^2
Cardinal was built solo by Jed Bridges, a senior product designer who has spent his career building the very engagement loops he deliberately removed from his own Bible app.^3 The result feels deliberate and calm, designed for depth, not entertainment.
