Built by Chris Lee, a Christian designer and developer who created Illuminate as a personal project after repeatedly hitting passages that confused him during his own Bible reading. As he describes it: "While there is a long tradition of commentaries and sermons interpreting the Bible, finding the right information can be difficult and disrupt the meditative act of reading." Illuminate was one of the earliest apps to apply large language models specifically to Bible reading — and was mentioned in a Christianity Today article exploring the rise of "BibleGPTs" and their implications for Scripture engagement.^4
