Tap any verse to ask a question and get an explanation grounded in Scripture. It also offers curated "instant answers" — pre-built prompts covering summaries of what's happened so far in the book, cross-references to similar themes elsewhere in the Bible, and guided reflection questions to help you pray through and apply what you're reading.^2
The app works completely offline with lightning-fast search (including direct verse jumping — type "John 3:16" and go), zero ads, and no data collection whatsoever — a refreshing commitment to privacy in a space crowded with trackers and upsells.^1 When you do ask a question about a verse, your query is sent to Gamaliel and OpenAI to generate an answer; everything else — chapter summaries, reflections, reading history — stays on your device.^6
Built by Chris Lee — a New York-based Christian designer and software builder with thirteen years across design, product, and engineering at companies including Google Chrome, Uber Eats, Patreon, and now Perplexity, where he is a Member of Design Staff. He created Illuminate as a personal project after repeatedly hitting passages that confused him during his own Bible reading, designing and building what he describes as "one of the first AI-powered Bible reading apps — pairing scripture with contextual commentary and instant answers to questions while reading."^2 Illuminate was mentioned in a Christianity Today article exploring the rise of "BibleGPTs" and their implications for Scripture engagement.^4
