Built by The Apologist Project — a nonprofit originally founded in 2003 as Abiding Grace and Peace Ministries — Gospel Bots emerged when founder Jake Carlson noticed the AI agents he built for apologetics were drawing more attention than anything else.^3 Now led by a six-person volunteer leadership team including Troy Michels (Head of Solutions), Christine Abernathy (Head of Developer Relations, formerly of Meta and FaithTech), Steve Verleye (Head of Business Development, former COO of the Colson Center for Christian Worldview), Hernando Betita III (Head of Marketing), and Geryl Winterowd (Head of Advancement), the platform now processes roughly 140,000 prompts per month across 192 languages — someone engaging with the tool every twenty seconds of every day, with growth accelerating especially in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Turkey.^3
Ministries can customize everything — their own content corpus aligned with doctrinal preferences, starter questions, branding, and a call to action connecting users to real people for deeper discipleship.^2 The platform offers a chat completion API (Fusion API) for custom integrations, automatic content ingestion from RSS feeds and podcasts, Bible translation switching, social and messaging integrations (WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, WeChat, Discord, SMS, and more), MCP server support for interoperability with other AI agents, and a choice of dozens of AI models.^2^6 It also assesses where each seeker is spiritually using frameworks like the Engel Scale to surface the right next step — a resource, a follow-up contact, or a crisis hotline — and small embeddable language models can be loaded onto devices for use in closed countries.^4
