The Serpent & The Seed is a poetic musical adventure from Discipleship Tech, the UK charity behind PrayerMate, that walks the Bible's big story, Genesis to Revelation, through the promise of the Seed of Eve.^1 You play as Mungo, a robin, in a world ruled by a Serpent, its earth choked by thorns and thistles, following whispers of an ancient book that tells how to end his reign.^2
The journey runs in four chapters. It opens in Eden, through the fall and exile, and ends with the promise that Eve's seed will one day crush the Serpent's head.^4 The second chapter traces that promise through the rest of the Old Testament, through Abraham, Moses, and David; the third sees the promises come together in Jesus; and the fourth ends in the new creation, back to the garden city and the tree of life.^4 Gentle puzzles, mini-games, hand-drawn art, and a custom score by US indie folk duo Poor Bishop Hooper carry the story.^1
Project lead Andy Geers caught the vision for a Bible narrative adventure as a young adult; it took twenty years to realize it.^5 After PrayerMate took off, he founded Discipleship Tech in 2018, and the team spent four years in full-time development.^4 Geers gives the idea's starting question in his NYX winner interview: "What if the Bible had been outlawed so that only one copy remained?"^5 Dan Gould, formerly of EA and Frontier before studying theology, led game design; Greg Clifton painted the artwork; BAFTA award-winning Amy Green of That Dragon, Cancer contributed to the script; and Geers and Jon Collins programmed it.^1
The charity makes the mobile game free, with no in-app purchases, so cost is not a barrier; donations help keep it free.^1 It is available on iPhone and iPad, on Android, and on Steam.^2^6 Players describe it in their own words:
